working on a yota

I don't have a picture this week because my mother lost our camera.  I will post one as soon as its located.  This week i worked on a 1989 toyota pickup.  It was running like it had a miss so I hooked it up to a scope and tested it.  It was firing fine so I was taught how to pull flash codes from the pickup and found a code for the throttle position sensor.  I went to alldata and found out that they can get knocked out of alignment. When I went to test it though I couldn't get any signal at all so I have bought a replacement sensor and will install it tomorrow.

Doing what we learned in class

My lawn mower would refuse to turn over with any speed.  So I used my meter to test the battery. It was perfectly good so I went to the starter and tested how many volts it was getting when I tried to turn the engine over.  I was only getting about 6 volts at the starter.  So I started to backtrack along the wire and when I got to the ignition solenoid I found that on one side i had 12.8 volts and on the other I had just over 6.  I replaced the solenoid and it now works great.  I know its not diesel but thought that it really reinforced what we were learning in class.  It was just like the boards in my mind.  I also finished the CAT basics that were due.  This week I learned how to relate the boards we had to do in class.  I know we did the trucks in class but doing this related way more to me for some reason and it made me understand what you were teaching us much better.

Installing a cb

This week I installed a cb radio into a F250.  To put the antenna where the person wanted we had to disconnect the fender.  It was fairly simple to wire in one cord from the antenna to the cb and then a power cord to a terminal in the fuse box inside the cab and for the ground we ended up using the same one that an electric trailer brake controller was attached to.  I also went down to the PACCAR show in Skagit county.  It was fun and learned some new stuff about the new trucks coming out.  I've also been learning a lot about basic wiring in class.

Bench bleeding

This week i installed a master cylinder in a 1985 toyota pickup.  It was simple and strait forward but i learned how to bench bleed one before you install it.  That is literally where you stick it in a vise fill it with brake fluid and manually bleed it until there are no more bubbles coming out of it.  By doing this you save a lot of time working all that air out through the brake lines.
